Brown Knoll - Peak District Walk
Wednesday 5th April 2006
I had been looking for an opportunity to do this walk for a while as it is one of my favourites, with the climb up Jacob's Ladder being my favourite climb in the Peak District. With clear skies the views extended for miles and despite the holiday crowds on Kinder Scout Brown Knoll, Rushup Edge and Mam Tor were very quiet.
Start: Edale car park (SK 1235 8535)
Route: Edale car park - Edale - Upper Booth - Jacob's Ladder - Brown Knoll (TP) - Rushup Edge - Mam Tor (TP) - Hollins Cross - Edale car park
Distance: 9.75 miles Ascent: 591 metres Time Taken: 5 hrs 30 mins
Weather: Blue sky in the morning, high cloud in the afternoon. Cold in the wind on the tops.

The path up to Ringing Roger is visible on the right.
From the start of the Pennine Way there are constant views of the Mam Tor (left) and Rushup Edge (right) ridges.

Upper Booth and the valley to Jacob's Ladder
The view down from about a quarter of the way up Jacob's Ladder.
From half way up Jacob's Ladder looking back down the valley, Mam Tor is the high point in the distance.
Once on Brown Knoll the views are in the opposite direction, here looking towards Mount Famine.
Brown Knoll trig point with Kinder Scout behind it.
Whenever I do this walk I like to cut off the path and have my lunch at the airshaft coming from Cowburn Tunnel.
Shining Tor & Cats Tor are visible in the far distance.

From Mam Tor the edges form the horizon, this is Howden Edge.
Next to it is Derwent Edge.
